The impact the Manhattan Project had on the world was momentous. It expedited an end to the war, saving many lives. The nuclear age began, which led to building the thermonuclear, or hydrogen bomb. It created an energy source that doesn’t pollute the air. The ensuing Cold War and arms race was a direct result of the Manhattan Project.
This has led to cooperation among the major superpower countries to mitigate nuclear proliferation; these countries may not have had such open dialog without the threat of mutual annihilation. Our lives are impacted daily; the United States has 104 nuclear power plants. In 2010, these plants generated 807 billion KWH accounting for 20% of our electrical usage. Without this power, we may have been required to ration electricity.
